The Opinel No. 9 Oyster Knife is a specialised tool designed for opening oysters and other shellfish. It's a variation on the classic Opinel folding knife, adapted for a specific culinary task.

A key feature is its short, sturdy blade, typically around 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) long. Unlike the sharp edge of a typical knife, the oyster knife blade is often blunted, with a sharp point. This design allows the user to effectively pry open shells without damaging the delicate meat inside. The blade is usually made from stainless steel, chosen for its corrosion resistance, which is important in a marine environment.

The handle is traditionally crafted from hardwood, with Padouk wood being a common choice for the No. 9. Padouk is favoured for its density, fine grain, and resistance to moisture, making it suitable for use with wet and slippery seafood. The handle's shape is ergonomic, providing a secure grip.

Like many Opinel knives, the No. 9 includes the Virobloc safety ring. This is a unique locking mechanism that can secure the blade in both the open and closed positions. This feature enhances safety during use and transport. When not in use, the knife folds compactly, making it easy to carry in a pocket or kitchen drawer. The Opinel No. 9 is a blend of functionality, safety, and traditional design, making it a popular choice for seafood enthusiasts.
